Our History

Realizing a Dream
Since inception nearly two decades ago, founders Jeffrey S. Burum and Andrew B. Wright, two successful homebuilders, envisioned a compassionate organization with the heart and mission to strive for significant contributions to affordable housing; but with a business structure to support these immense goals. From its very first development, it completed all the development, construction, property management, and ongoing asset management in-house by its own team of specialists. Through strong social programs, the organization provided residents with a sense of community while encouraging them to fulfill their aspirations. It also established Guiding Principles to shape clear expectations and commitment to quality.

National CORE Today
National CORE constantly strives to improve the quality of life for low-income residents by utilizing best practices from the social service, business and academic sectors. The organization has grown from three to more than 300 employees and houses its own project development, construction, property management, accounting, compliance, and asset management departments. National CORE and its affiliated 501 (c) 3 nonprofit, Hope Through Housing Foundation provide high quality family and senior services to National CORE communities. Programs focus on three key areas that contribute to community vitality and quality of life: Child Development, Youth Development, and Senior Wellness.

The organization has undergone many changes through tremendous growth. However, through it all , it has maintained its core values and its commitment to the communities it has been chartered to serve. Working in collaboration, many more communities will realize the hope, compassion, and capacity of National CORE, its Mission, Guiding Principles, and Spirit.
